The real strength of The American Legion is demonstrated best when our whole Legion Family works together to support the mission of The American Legion. Our American Legion Family is over 4 million members strong.

The American Legion Family includes The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, American Legion Riders and Sons of the American Legion.

American Legion Auxiliary (ALA)

Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. The American Legion Auxiliary’s mission is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. The American Legion Auxiliar y is the oldest member of the Legion Family of units. The Auxiliary is an independent organization with their own legal and corporate identity. Working together The American Legion and The American Legion Auxiliary have maintained an unwavering commitment since 1919 to honor those who serve America. May is Red Poppy month, honoring all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The poem “In Flanders Fields” by Canadian, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae has been a symbol of remembrance in The American Legion since 1920.The red poppy as a symbol of the sacrifices our military have made, a symbol to open people’s hearts and inspire them to donate to this important fundraising program. With a proud 100-year history, the American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. Nearly 800,000 American Legion Auxiliary members work in their communities through the more than 9,000 local units spread across the country. The American Legion Auxiliary’s mission to serve veterans, the military and their families is carried out through its hundreds of outreach programs delivered by its members, volunteers and National Headquarters.

2021-2022 National Commander

The 2021-2022 National Commander of the Sons of The American Legion – Michael Fox is a Californian. Michael is a Past Detachment Commander form our Golden State.  His special project this year is called “Flying Flags for Heroes.” “Flying Flags for Heroes” definitely falls under the S.A.L. label of Americanism.  As such, our Detachment Jr. Vice Commander, Sean Brandon and the Americanism Commission will be assisting any and all who would like to help make it a success.  Please visit the “Flying Flags for Heroes” web page  for more information and to see where you can fit in. Remember – every day is Memorial Day when it comes to Flying Flags for Heroes. Our Detachment’s goal is a full 10% of the National Goal (or 100,000 out of 1,000,000 flags). 

 


Founded in 1932, Sons of The American Legion exists to honor the service and sacrifice of Legionnaires. We proudly support our Veterans and their families. Join us and help improve the lives of our heroes.

S.A.L. members include males of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the U.S. military and were eligible for American Legion membership. Members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion comprise the Legion Family, which has a combined membership of nearly 4.2 million.

Commander Greg “Doc” Gibbs personally invites you to join this fast growing group of patriotic Americans who honor the military sacrifices of those who came before us. Founded in 1932, Sons of The American Legion exists to honor the service and sacrifice of Legionnaires.

There is an open invitation to those who qualify, to join the Sons of the American Legion.

 

American Legion Riders (ALR)

The American Legion Riders (ALR) are Legionnaires, who are also motorcycle enthusiasts. They all belong to the Legion, the Legion Auxiliary or the Sons of the American Legion. American Legion Riders are well known for their charitable work, including the significant funds they have raised for the Legacy Scholarship Fund.
